Long active in the organization as a member of the Women’s Division, Susan served as its co-president from 1999 – 2003. Under her leadership, hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised through our annual Donor Dinner, a signature community dinner and auction event.

During the past 20 years, Susan served on key committees and joined the board of directors. She and her husband Jonathan became members of the Winner’s Circle, our annual leadership giving society, and also our Circle of Honor, our planned giving society. These varied roles served as the foundation of her next and most important leadership role: In 2017, Susan became Chair of the Board of JGS Lifecare.

What followed was a period of upheaval for JGS Lifecare as Susan steered us through unprecedented challenges. Under her leadership, JGS Lifecare implemented important strategic decisions and course corrections that have made us a stronger and more resilient organization. Of particular significance is our recent affiliation in 2019 with Legacy Lifecare, the non-profit management resources collaborative, that has provided JGS with access to the infrastructure and resources essential to succeed in healthcare today. Susan was instrumental in researching, developing and securing this important relationship. More recently, Susan lent her calm and disciplined leadership skills to help JGS navigated the pandemic, always prioritizing the protection of the safety and well-being of our residents, staff and families.

During her tenure, she worked tirelessly with Legacy Lifecare and the Board to strengthen JGS Lifecare’s key performance indicators. And we saw remarkable progress – specifically in improved quality measures and a rising star rating. An incredibly devoted chair, she served two consecutive terms, from 2017-19 and 2019-2021.

Beyond JGS Lifecare, Susan is a volunteer and business leader throughout our region. She has served on the board of Peoples Bank and Holyoke Community College Foundation. Susan is the president of the third-generation family-owned business, Marcus Printing, Co., in Holyoke.

Susan and Jonathan live in Longmeadow, where they raised their three sons, Paul (recently married to Courtney), Sam (engaged to Emily) and Stephen.

“It is my great personal pleasure to pay tribute to my predecessor and dear friend,” says JGS Board Chair Dr. Stuart Anfang. “Susan provide outstanding leadership during four very tumultuous years. Under her wise guidance, we emerged stronger and better positioned to face challenges and embrace new opportunities. I am delighted to recognize Susan for her commitment to JGS Lifecare and the people we serve by presenting her with the 2022 Chairman’s Service Award.”
