Message from Rob Whitten, President of JGS Lifecare

July 23, 2025

Dear Residents and Families of JGS Lifecare,

I am delighted to share some exciting updates with you as we enjoy the summer season.

While it has been a warm start to the summer, our residents have been staying cool inside with a variety of activities. Our summer household BBQs with A1 and A2 kick off on July 31 and we have a busy August planned, including a JGS Luau Party on the patio, a visit from the famous Gilbert the Party Pig and our popular Monthly Birthday Party.

I would like to welcome Gina Lucchese to the JGS family! Gina has recently joined us as the new Executive Director of Ruth’s House. She comes to us with many years of leadership within the Assisted Living field as well as a strong background in nursing. Please take a moment to stop in and meet Gina on your next visit to Ruth’s House.

Lastly, I’d like to thank our staff, volunteers and sponsors who recently made our 44th Annual Frankel Kinsler Classic Day of Tournament such a great success. The JGS Lifecare signature tournament brought the community together for a day of fun, food, and friendship to support the care of our community’s elders. Over 200 people participated in golf, pickleball, bridge, canasta, and mahjong tournaments. The event raised funds for enhanced programming and services for our residents. It was a memorable day for all.

Warm regards,

Rob

Summertime at JGS Lifecare Brings Joy and Connection

July 24, 2025

As the warmth of summer spreads across the JGS Lifecare campus, so too does the spirit of joy, renewal, and community. Residents have embraced the season through a wide range of engaging and meaningful activities, creating opportunities for connection, laughter, and growth—both personal and botanical!

Green Thumbs and Great Conversations

Jeff Eleveld, affectionately known as “The Plant Guy” from The Li’l Plant Shop in Plainville, brought his infectious enthusiasm and vast horticultural knowledge back to the Leavitt Family Jewish Home. As a horticulture therapist, Jeff delights residents by sharing fascinating and little-known facts about plants. Each session includes a hands-on planting activity, giving residents the chance to nurture their own greenery at home. His most recent visit focused on the humble potato—a tuber from an underground stem. (And yes, it’s a vegetable!)

Milestone Moments

We were thrilled to celebrate two extraordinary birthdays this spring! Anna Felendzer turned 100, and Carmelo Vega reached the incredible age of 102. Both were honored with official citations from the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate, presented by Representative Brian Ashe and Senator Jake Oliveira. These special gatherings were heartwarming celebrations of lives well lived, surrounded by family, friends, and joyful memories.

Planting Joy, Harvesting Happiness

Residents at both the Leavitt Family Jewish Home and Ruth’s House have been busy digging into their gardens, planting vegetables and flowers. There’s something deeply satisfying about getting your hands in the soil and watching tomatoes and cucumbers grow—and they’re as tasty in salads as they are rewarding to cultivate!

Engagement and Enrichment, Every Day

The Life Enrichment team continues to offer creative and varied programming that keeps residents active, engaged, and smiling. From parachute games and chair volleyball to karaoke sing-alongs, bingo, Pokémon tournaments, and mini-golf competitions, there’s something for everyone. Puppy therapy adds an extra dose of joy, offering comfort and laughter in equal measure.

Colorful Creativity and Musical Magic

Tie-dye fever swept through the Home as residents across all households created their own vibrant t-shirts. The end result? A rainbow of color and pride as residents wore their handcrafted creations!

We also welcomed a new performer, Sarah the Fiddler (Sarah Michel), whose high-energy show had toes tapping and spirits soaring. Blending classical, bluegrass, and Celtic styles, Sarah’s performance was more than music—it was a celebration of connection and joy. As Sarah says, “It’s about fun, feeling, and connecting with one another.” We can’t wait to have her back!

Honoring Our Heroes

Our annual Veterans BBQ was another unforgettable event, bringing resident veterans together for a meaningful afternoon of camaraderie, shared stories, and perfectly grilled food (thanks to Rob Whitten, President of JGS Lifecare). Veterans from the Longmeadow Department of Veterans Services also joined, creating a powerful atmosphere of mutual respect and community. Special thanks to Lena Vellturo, Longmeadow Veterans’ Service Officer, and Cheryl Gumlaw, Director of Life Enrichment, for their heartfelt coordination.

Technology Meets Tranquility

At Ruth’s House, the Sensory Room continues to offer a peaceful retreat. Featuring a cinematic projector that displays soothing visuals — from underwater marine scenes to breathtaking landscapes— the room helps reduce anxiety and create a calming space for relaxation and reflection.

Bingo games have now found a new home in the Sensory Room too—and they’ve never been more popular! When a resident wins, the room celebrates with lights and colors that change to mark the moment. It’s a simple but deeply meaningful way to create joy and support residents, especially those living with dementia.

Exploring the World Through VR

Residents are also discovering the wonders of virtual reality. With VR headsets, they can visit distant cities, enjoy nature walks, or relive familiar sights—all from the comfort of Ruth’s House. It’s an exciting and innovative way to stimulate the mind and spark imagination.

Summer has certainly brought its bloom to JGS Lifecare, not just in flowers and gardens, but in every smile, shared moment, and new memory created. Here’s to the joys of the season—and the people who make it so special.

The Power of One: Creativity, Kindness, and the People Who Make a Difference

July 24, 2025

At JNH, we believe that one person truly can make a difference. This month, we’re proud to shine a light on three incredible individuals – two staff members and one resident – whose unique contributions have brought joy, inspiration, and connection to our community.

Autumn Francis: Turning Creativity into Connection

Anyone who knows Autumn Francis, a valued member of our Life Enrichment team at the Leavitt Family Jewish Home, knows she radiates positivity. Whether through her cheerful and upbeat demeanor, her beautiful singing voice, or her natural artistic talent, Autumn brings warmth and energy to everything she does.

A standout performer in our annual talent shows, Autumn has recently turned her attention to the walls and windows of our community—literally. Using her creative gifts, she has been transforming our shared spaces into bright, welcoming, and uplifting environments filled with color and meaning.

“I don’t want it to feel like a nursing home,” Autumn says. “This is people’s home.”

That philosophy inspired the creation of one of her most impactful projects: the Positivity Wall in the dining room of the A-1 household, where Autumn leads daily activities. Faced with a large, blank wall, she envisioned a space that would both engage residents and offer daily encouragement.

She invited residents to paint canvas shapes of all sizes in bold, expressive colors that reflected their personalities and moods. She then added handwritten messages of hope and motivation to each piece. The result is a vibrant mosaic—reminiscent of a stained glass window—filled with affirmations such as:

  • “Think Positive”
  • “Dream”
  • “Compassion”
  • “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream”
  • “Be like a tree. Stay grounded. Keep growing. And know when to let go.”

Autumn also brought residents together to paint colorful puzzle pieces, which she assembled into a heart surrounded by words like “Laughter,” “Love,” “Joy,” and “Happy.” The Positivity Wall has since become a focal point – not just visually, but emotionally. Residents beam with pride when they see their work on display. Families and staff frequently stop to admire and reflect.

But Autumn didn’t stop there. Her imaginative paintings have found their way to the dining room windows, now featuring lively underwater scenes that spark curiosity and conversation. The windows of our coffee shop have been transformed with cheerful depictions of coffee mugs, sundaes, and floral designs that make every visit feel a little more special.

There’s no telling where Autumn’s creativity will land next—but one thing is certain: her passion, positivity, and artistic spirit continue to brighten the lives of all who live and work here. Thank you, Autumn, for sharing your light with our community.

John “Johnny” Scalia and Michael Wolf Receive Nominations for Awards from the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association (Mass ALA):

John “Johnny” Scalia, a cherished resident of Ruth’s House, was recently nominated for the Resident Spirit Award by former Executive Director Jessica Spezzano. “Johnny is an absolute one-of-a-kind resident—but even more, a one-of-a-kind human being,” Spezzano shared. “DJ Johnny, and one of the biggest Yankee fans I know, is truly the glue that holds resident engagement together and the reason for so many smiles in the Ruth’s House community.”

Johnny’s passion for music is not only a personal source of joy but also a gift he shares with others, creating a vibrant, uplifting atmosphere for all. Thank you, Johnny!

Michael Wolf, Program Director of the Garden Neighborhood at Ruth’s House, was also nominated by Spezzano for the Program Innovation Award. “Michael is an exceptional, bright, compassionate, and patient individual who gives his all in everything he does,” she wrote. “Whether facilitating a happy hour or introducing virtual reality experiences, his creativity and innovation with technology have transformed daily life for our seniors.”

Michael has led the way in integrating tools like VR headsets and large-screen technology to create meaningful and calming experiences for our memory care residents. His fresh perspective and forward-thinking approach consistently bring joy and connection to those he serves.

Although other individuals were ultimately selected as award recipients, we are incredibly proud of Johnny and Michael’s nominations. These recognitions are a testament to their compassion, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication to the residents and the Ruth’s House community.

Thank you, Autumn, Johnny, and Michael, for being an essential part of our vibrant, caring communities. Whether through a brushstroke, a kind word, a shared musical moment, or a calming virtual journey, you remind us daily of the power one person has to make a lasting difference.

44th Annual Frankel-Kinsler Classic Day of Tournaments Supporting the Care of our Community’s Elders

June 20, 2025

JGS Lifecare held its 44th Annual Frankel-Kinsler Classic Day of Tournaments at Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow, on Monday, June 15th. Over 200 people participated in golf, pickleball, card-playing tournaments, and a celebratory awards dinner. The event grossed over $127,000 to support JGS Lifecare’s various senior care services.

Over the past 44 years, the Frankel Kinsler Classic has raised more than $2 Million for elder care. These donations have funded various improvements, including new resident vans, resident furnishings, hi-low beds, computer technologies to help keep elders stimulated, engaged and connected to their families, new flooring, and more. This year, the tournament proceeds will directly support programs and services that enhance the quality of life for residents.

“As an organization whose majority of funding comes through Medicaid – which pays only 60% of the cost of care – our Frankel-Kinsler Classic is an enormously important way for us to engage the community to provide fiscal resources to help us maintain our quality of care and enrich our programming,” commented Susan Kimball Halpern, vice president of development at JGS Lifecare. “We are so grateful for the tremendous show of support from area businesses and individuals who join us in our commitment to care for our elders.”
