Message from Rob Whitten, President of JGS Lifecare

April 14, 2025

Dear Residents and Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Passover. As the weather warms, preparations are underway on our campus to enhance the grounds and courtyards so they can be enjoyed by all. Soon the month of May and all it entails will be upon us, with beautiful flowers as well as celebrations in honor of National Skilled Nursing Care Center Week.

Held annually since 1967, and always beginning on Mother’s Day, National Skilled Nursing Care Center Week is May 11-17, 2025. Sponsored by the American Health Care Association, the week celebrates the essential role skilled nursing care centers play in providing high-quality, long-term and post-acute care to millions of individuals each year. At JGS, each day will be filled with events for both staff and residents. Our celebration includes raffles, food trucks, dessert trucks, performances and events.

I am happy to announce that JGS Life Care was awarded a Nonprofit Security Grant Program through the Office of Grants and Research, Homeland Security Division under the Commonwealth Nonprofit Security Grant Program (CNSGP) from the Office of Grants and Research. This state agency is part of the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. The grant will enable us to make a number of improvements around our campus, including enhancements to the Emergency Preparedness Plan and to the doors and windows throughout the campus.

Enjoy the spring season!

Warm regards,

Rob

Get to Know Jill Hemeon, Area Director of Community Relations

April 25, 2025

Jill Hemeon has an affinity for the elder generation. “I never had the chance to meet all four of my grandparents as they unfortunately passed away before I was born. As a result, I have always had an appreciation for the senior population,” remarks Jill. “My close friends actually tease me that I treat their grandparents like my own. I love talking to them and hearing their stories. Guess I’m just an old soul at heart!”

Growing up in Danvers, Jill was the youngest of three children. Today her loving, close-knit family all live near one another and Jill’s parents still reside in the family home that she grew up in! Currently Jill and her boyfriend, Matthew, live in Medford. The couple met in college and reconnected a few years later. The rest, as they say, is history.

Jill began her career working for experience alongside studying Hospitality Management at the University of New Hampshire. It was a logical choice as she enjoyed talking to people and helping them navigate their travel plans. She flourished working in the hotel industry until Covid hit and travel basically became nonexistent. In retrospect, the pandemic ended up shaping the course of her Jill’s career. She applied for a variety of jobs and after a few different opportunities, she found her niche: working with seniors and their families while guiding them through the transition to senior living communities. Jill joined the Legacy Lifecare family in 2021 as the Director of Community Relations at Edelweiss Village Assisted Living, an affiliate of Legacy Lifecare.

In her current role as Area Director of Community Relations, Jill works closely with the organization’s Marketing and Communications team, assisting all communities within Legacy Lifecare. Jill feels fortunate to be part of the Legacy Lifecare organization. “I have worked at other senior living companies, but I can honestly say there is something different and very special about Legacy Lifecare,” said Jill. “Perhaps it is because we are a nonprofit. In any event, it’s obvious that Legacy Lifecare truly cares about its residents, staff, family members and community partners. My role enables me to visit all the different campuses and see, firsthand, how many lives are touched each and every day.”

Residents and family members make a huge impact on Jill. “I really like interacting with seniors and hearing their stories. Each one is so unique. There is a wonderful 104-year-old woman at Harriett & Ralph Kaplan Estates who encourages me to take the stairs instead of the elevator,” said Jill. “She insists it will keep me young!” Another family member greets Jill with a big hug every time he sees her. “He tells me how grateful he is for helping his family explore long-term care at the German Centre Home and how they can sleep at night knowing their mother is well-cared for in a safe environment.” Adds Jill, “This is what inspires me to do my job!”

In her spare time, Jill enjoys trying new restaurants and cuisines. “I am definitely a foodie!” Puzzles are also a passion. “You can always find a 1000-piece puzzle being worked on in my home,” said Jill. As both Jill and Matthew grew up with dogs, they plan on getting one of their own as soon as their life calms down a bit and they have the time needed to become dog parents. Meanwhile, Jill’s role as “Auntie” to her four beautiful nieces (two who are twins) brings her countless hours of fun and surprises. “The girls are an absolute joy.”

When asked what she likes best about her job, Jill is quick to respond. “It is so rewarding to help individuals, and their family members make the transition to senior living, especially when it is what’s needed for a higher quality of life. There is nothing better than seeing a resident settle in their new home. In fact, I never tire of hearing a family member tell me they can’t get in touch with their loved one because they are too busy socializing at an activity or up walking with physical therapy working on gaining strength back. That is music to my ears!”

Making New Connections at Ruth’s House!

April 23, 2025

Ruth’s House Assisted Living, a vibrant community, offers residents not only exceptional care but also the opportunity for new friendships and companionship. Sandy and Vinnie are two residents who found out, firsthand, how this nurturing environment can lead to an unexpected but welcome relationship.

Sandy’s journey to Ruth’s House began after a fall in her previous home in Miami, Florida. The former 4th and 5th-grade teacher wanted to be closer to her son and decided to move into Ruth’s House. “The people here are wonderful,” Sandy shared with a warm smile. “I make an effort to participate in everything because you never know what you might learn, or who you might meet!”

Vinnie, who holds a doctorate in biomedical engineering and enjoyed a long career as professor of engineering, moved to Ruth’s House from Worcester about a year ago. The assisted living quickly became home. Vinnie exudes a genuine warmth and enjoys welcoming new residents.

Reflecting on their relationship, Vinnie shared, “Sandy and I met and immediately knew it was a special connection. When I meet new people, I want to know everything about them.”

Their affection is heartwarming. “We enjoy talking about life and each other,” Vinnie continued. “Plus, we agree that what’s important is love, kindness, and treating people the way they should be treated.”

Sandy and Vinnie are planning a Celebration of their Lives in the Fall. Their story serves as a testament to the opportunities for meaningful connections that flourish within our vibrant community. Clearly, Ruth’s House enriches the lives of its residents in the most wonderful ways.

Warming Hearts and Spirits: A Vibrant Time at JGS Lifecare

April 23, 2025

The last three months at Leavitt Family Jewish Home and Ruth’s House have been a hub of warmth, laughter, and enriching experiences. Our dedicated Live Enrichment teams arranged a diverse array of activities, ensuring our residents stay active, stimulated, and connected.

Our centennial celebration of Irene Peros’s 100th birthday on January 20th was indeed a special event. The community gathered to honor Irene, marking this incredible achievement with joy and well wishes. The celebrations continued into April with another remarkable 100th birthday, this time for Mary Negrucci, who was born on April 4th.

Over twenty members of Mary’s family joined in the festivities, making it a truly uplifting occasion. Both Irene and Mary received special citations recognizing their remarkable milestones from the offices of Senator Jake Oliveira and Representative Brian Ashe, adding a touch of official recognition to these joyous events.

February brought a delightful intergenerational experience with our annual Senior Prom. Students from Longmeadow High School graced us with their youthful energy, joining our residents for an early evening of singing, dancing, and joyful celebration, all set to the timeless tunes of Irving Lewis. The highlight of the afternoon was the crowning of David and Sharon Aminia as King and Queen of the Senior Prom. Their beaming smiles radiated the love and pride they felt, creating a magical atmosphere.

At Ruths House, we are harnessing the benefits of technology for our residents.  Our Sensory Room now features a cinematic projector showcasing calming visuals and stimulating movies.  The staff are enjoying it too!  And in our Garden Level, residents have access to Virtual Reality Fun, showcasing a virtual walk through and experience of an aquarium.

As March arrived, so did the joyous and festive holiday of Purim. Our staff members brought the biblical story of Queen Esther to life with a spirited reading of the Megillah, each donning colorful costumes to recount the tale of the Jewish people’s salvation in ancient Persia. Residents enthusiastically followed the dramatic narrative, celebrating Queen Esther’s bravery in thwarting Haman’s wicked plot. The celebration wouldn’t have been complete without the traditional and delicious hamantaschen cookies, their three corners playfully symbolizing Haman’s hat. Beyond the merriment, Purim’s emphasis on community, generosity, and helping those in need resonated deeply. Adding to the festive atmosphere, the talented Laura Wetzler graced us with a beautiful musical performance, filling the room with delightful melodies.

April ushered in the spring season, and with it, much joy! Volunteers and staff at Ruth’s House enjoyed planting bulbs and flowers with our memory care residents.  At the Leavitt Home, residents enjoyed a heartwarming visit from some adorable puppies. These furry bundles of joy were passed around, eliciting smiles, hugs, and gentle kisses from everyone. The pure affection of these little creatures brought so much joy and warmth, proving that sometimes, the best medicine comes with four paws and a wagging tail!

Over at Ruth’s House, residents welcomed spring with a visit to the 12th annual Festival of Flowers at the Springfield Museums. Talented florists and garden club members creatively interpreted objects in the art, science, and history museums. Our residents enjoyed seeing the beautiful displays and were delighted with the colors and fragrances!

The month of April also encompassed the significant holidays of Passover and Easter, bringing opportunities for reflection and spiritual connection. Cantor Elise Barber led meaningful Seder services at both the Leavitt Family Jewish Home and Ruth’s House, guiding residents through the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. Cantor Barber eloquently shared, “Not only do we read about escape from freedom thousands of years ago, we are taught to see ourselves in the story. By putting ourselves in the story, we become more compassionate and empathetic to others, and we can be inspired to help everyone on Earth to be free. That is what we do here at JGS Lifecare. We do what we can to see beyond a cursory view of someone. We take deeper looks, trying to see each other for who we truly are, listening to stories, getting to know people’s needs, and learning each other’s passions. We do this for our residents, for our colleagues, and hopefully, for ourselves.”

Following Passover, our residents came together for Easter Services, led by Reverend Doug Bixby from The First Church of Christ in Longmeadow. The service, held in a full house, offered a time for reflection, joy, and renewed faith, acknowledging Jesus’ victory over death and the promise of eternal life for believers.

Our vibrant tapestry of activities truly exemplifies our commitment to enriching the lives of our residents. From celebrating personal milestones, engaging in cultural traditions, enjoying intergenerational connections, and experiencing the simple joy of animal companionship, these activities strengthen the community within our home. We look forward to providing more meaningful experiences for our residents in the months to come!

April 23, 2025

Show Your Support Today!

On Monday June 16th, we expect over 220 people to participate in our 44th Annual Frankel-Kinsler Classic Day of Tournaments at Twin Hill Country Club. This event raises awareness about enriching the lives of residents across the JGS Lifecare Campus of Care. In addition to golf, the tournament includes pickleball, canasta, mahjong and bridge tournaments.

You Can Make a Difference!

You don’t have to attend to make a difference (although we would love you to participate!) Donate online and help us continue providing exceptional care for our residents. Please read about our tournament and MAKE YOUR DONATION OR REGISTER TO PARTICIPATE HERE.

Tournament History

The tournament is named in memory Michael Frankel, past Chairman of the JGS Board who passed away in 2013 at the young age of 49. It is also named in honor of the Raymond and Herman Kinsler Families, longtime supporters of JGS Lifecare. “The Frankel and Kinsler families have provided extraordinary leadership over the years to JGS Lifecare,” commented Susan Halpern, vice president of development at JGS Lifecare. “This tournament is a tribute to them and helps us continue their extraordinary legacy of caring and good deeds.” Last year over $110,000 was raised through sponsorships, donations and player registrations.

Participants enjoy entry into the tournament of their choice, a barbecue lunch, cocktail hour, awards dinner and an ice-cream sundae bar. Golfers will have a chance to win several hole-in-one contests sponsored by Teddy Bear Pools and Tekoa Country Club. Charity Golf International is offering golfers the opportunity to donate to win a $5,000 Dream Golf Getaway. The $5,000 trip includes: Airfare for 2 to San Francisco, two nights at The Pebble Beach Lodge, and 3 Rounds of Golf for 2 (Pebble Beach Links, Spyglass Hill & Spanish Bay). Awards will be presented during the dinner portion of the event.

Your Support Means So Much

Eldercare organizations like JGS Lifecare have been under severe financial stress due to insufficient funding through governmental programs that do not cover the costs of care; increased expenses due to rising costs; and critical staffing shortages. JGS relies on the community’s support to help raise financial resources and bridge the gap, and the Frankel-Kinsler Classic is a central source of the community’s support. This year’s event proceeds will fund the enhancements to programs and services that enrich the lives of our elders.

Welcome Cantor Elise Barber, Director of Spiritual Life, Multifaith Chaplain

March 26, 2025

For Cantor Elise Barber, it was an easy decision to transition from being a professional actor to being a cantor. Elise, who worked as an actor and singer when she was a child until well in her 20’s, always enjoyed talking to people. “I loved doing theatre,” admits Elsie, “but I realized that I wanted to help people in some way. I like hearing the residents’ stories and guiding them and their families through challenging times. There is so much love and passion involved in this work!”

Elise started at JGS Lifecare in February and quickly became an integral part of the organization. “I am so moved by the Life Enrichment team and their love, joy, and dedication in their work,” said Elise. “They are incredibly creative and passionate. I truly enjoy the team and especially like working with Chaplain Sarah Malzone.” Added Barber, “It’s also been wonderful getting to know the residents. I really love that aspect of my job.”

Elise received a B.A. in Theatre from American University, attended a year course at Pardes in Jerusalem, completed the Ulpan (Hebrew Intensive) program at Columbia University and holds a TESOL certificate from the School for International Training. Elise was ordained as a cantor from Hebrew College. Also earning a M.A. in Judaic Studies. She’s been at Temple Beth El in Springfield since 2011 and is currently a rabbinical student at the Academy for Jewish Religion.

Additionally, Elise has performed in concerts at many synagogues including at Sinai Temple in Springfield, MA and Temple Israel in Boston. She has been a featured soloist with the Springfield Symphony for the past five years as well as a volunteer teacher with a local interfaith clergy group.

Growing up in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, Tennessee, Elise still visits her family’s cabin in the Smoky Mountains. “It my favorite place in the world,” said Elise. She met her husband, Rabbi Ben Weiner, in Jerusalem when he was in his fourth year of rabbinical school and Elise was in her first year of cantorial school. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, the couple, along with son Efraim (12) daughter Batya (5) reside on a small homestead in Deerfield. “We have goats, chickens, and more produce than anyone would know what to do with!” Both children attend Lander Grinspoon Academy, a Jewish day school in Northampton.

When asked about the most gratifying aspect of being a cantor, Elise was quick to respond. “I truly love helping people connect with their Judaism, their community, and themselves. “I have always found the pastoral parts of my position as a cantor most engaging. As a cantor, I help people through lifecycle rituals including birth, coming of age, weddings, and death. I also enjoy visiting people in hospitals, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes.”

Elise’s commitment to her community is evident in all aspects of her life. Outside of her professional duties, she often volunteers at local charities and participates in community events. Her dedication to helping others extends beyond her immediate circle, as she actively seeks opportunities to make a positive impact on a larger scale. Elise’s warm and compassionate nature makes her a beloved figure among colleagues, friends, and family alike. Her enthusiasm for her work and her genuine care for others truly set her apart as an inspiring role model.

In her spare time, Elise enjoys spending time with her children, exploring nature, reading, exercising and all things musical. At the moment, she and her husband are busy planning Efraim’s bar mitzvah, which will be held this November.

Elise is excited about her role at JGS Lifecare. “I look forward to working with people of all faiths, leading Jewish services, and serving as a Jewish resource,” remarks Elise. “Most of all, Elise feels honored working with the residents. “I love hearing people’s stories and helping them and their families through challenging times. It is my passion.”
