People are Talking!

Message from Rob Whitten, President of JGS Lifecare

Dear Residents and Families,

As we welcome the spring and summer seasons, we are excited to host a variety of activities and events designed to bring our community together and create meaningful memories for residents, families, and staff alike.

During May, we proudly celebrate National Nurses Week and National Nursing Home Week. Residents and staff will enjoy a week of activities including carnivals, scavenger hunts, socials, food trucks, daily celebrations, and giveaways. These celebrations recognize the critical role that nurses play at JGS Lifecare.

We are pleased to announce that the remodel of our New York Household will begin later this year. The project will include private rooms, full bathrooms, updated common areas, and a fully functional kitchen where meals will be prepared within the household. The remodel marks the first step in the modernization of all our households in the years ahead.

In June, we look forward to our first-ever “Golden Olympics,” a collaborative event between JNH and Ruth’s House. We will be holding morning competitions at JNH, followed by a BBQ and afternoon competitions at Ruth’s House. The spirted games will include volleyball, bowling, golf, cornhole, bocce and axe throwing.

I hope you can join us for what promises to become a wonderful new tradition!

Warm regards,

Rob

Get to Know Christina Tuohey

Communications Director of JGS Lifecare and Legacy Lifecare

Christina Tuohey has the best of both worlds. As Director of Communications for JGS Lifecare/Legacy Lifecare, she is able to combine her nonprofit experience with her love of photography and writing — creating a “dream” job.

“Working with seniors feels like a natural progression in my career path,” notes Christina. “Over the years, I’ve developed deep admiration for the dedication and compassion that go into caring for older adults. I find great meaning in telling the stories of our staff and residents and sharing the everyday moments of joy that happen within our communities.”

Christina earned her BA in Philosophy from Georgia State University in Atlanta, followed by a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy from Bay Path University in Longmeadow. She focused on nonprofit fundraising, communications, marketing, and organizational management. Christina joined JGS Lifecare in 2017 as Director of Development, then became Director of Marketing & Community and later she was appointed Executive Director of Ruth’s House Assisted Living. In 2024 Christina was promoted to Communications Director — a role she thoroughly enjoys.

Raised in the South, Christina met her husband Sean in Boston soon after college. The couple have been married since 2012 and reside in Longmeadow, Massachusetts with their three children —Ellie (12), Brandon (11), and Theo (9) and their beloved dog Ash. Life in the Tuohey household is indeed busy, but Christina wouldn’t have it any other way.

Working with residents gives Christina the opportunity to witness the friendships that form—both among residents and between residents and staff. “Hearing about their life experiences is incredibly inspiring,” says Christina. “Every person carries a unique story and perspective, and I’m grateful for the chance to learn from them.” She also loves being able to highlight and celebrate the staff. “Whether it’s sharing their stories on social media or announcing an award they’ve earned, I’m proud to shine a light on their work. We couldn’t provide the level of care we do without their dedication.”

Christina’s grandmother has been one of the greatest influences in her life. She was fortunate to help care for her at Ruth’s House before she passed at age 95. “My grandmother was incredibly strong yet endlessly kind, treating everyone with warmth and respect. Her approach to life—seeing everyone as a friend—still inspires me today.”

Christina credits the More Marketing team as one reason she relishes her job so much. “I’m fortunate to work alongside a group of exceptionally smart, kind, and hardworking women,” explains Christina. “It’s an honor to be part of such a dedicated and inspiring team.”

Some of Christina’s most cherished moments are when her children come to visit the Longmeadow campus. “The residents light up the moment they walk in!” exclaims Christina. “My sons loves playing chess with one of our residents, Steve, and my daughter enjoys singing for everyone. When she performs songs from the ’40s and ’50s, residents often share memories those songs bring back. These intergenerational connections are incredibly special.”

An avid reader, Christina now reads about a book a week—though she readily admits she didn’t really enjoy reading until she was in her 30s. She hopes her children will discover the same joy. Her advice to them is simple: read what you love! “Whether it’s a video game, magazine or a book about Broadway, keep exploring until you find what excites you.”

When asked about her hobbies, Christina responds with a laugh. “At this stage of life, I jokingly say that my hobby is driving my children everywhere.” She said with a smile. “But I genuinely love supporting them in all their activities. It’s what parenting is all about.”

Susan Garstka: A Ray of Sunshine Amidst a Lifetime of Love and Laughter

Susan Garstka is a cherished resident at The Leavitt Family Jewish Home, enjoying life to the fullest. From the moment Susan Garstka enters a room, she brings warmth, energy, and joy. Her family says she has always had a gift for making people smile!

Born in Westfield, Massachusetts, the only child of Ernie and Christine Viens, Susan spent much of her childhood in the Springfield area. She graduated from Classical High School and then attended Westfield State College and obtained a teaching degree. It is there that she met her husband, Wally Garstka. They look forward to celebrating their 59th anniversary this coming July!

An only child, family has always been at the center of Susan’s life. She was a stay-at-home mom and devoted herself to caring for her husband and raising her four children: Jeff, Scott, Tim and Missy. Susan was known for always putting others first and making sure everyone felt loved and cared for. When her grandchildren were born, she devoted a lot of her time to babysitting for them and having them over to her house. She and her husband were always involved in their day-to-day activities, attending birthday parties, dance classes, and school performances. Her eight grandchildren—Ethan, Andrew, Max, Brandon, Nolan, Abby, Will, and Michael—are a constant source of pride and joy.

Susan’s home was famously stocked with every favorite snack and cereal imaginable, just in case one of the grandchildren stopped by. Whether it was cookies, Pop-Tarts, or a favorite breakfast treat, Susan wanted everyone to feel welcome and cared for. She also loved to stay busy. Her family laughs when they talk about her constant cleaning, running errands, folding laundry, and maintaining the household. Her house was spotless. “She vacuumed twice a day for 50 years!” exclaims Jeff.

When her children got older, Susan returned to the classroom. She devoted over 20 years as a first-grade teacher. Her dedication, warmth, and talent earned her the prestigious Golden Apple Award. Even years after she retired, former students would still approach her to say, “I’ll always remember that you were my first-grade teacher!” It’s obvious Susan made a lasting impact in many people’s lives, not only through education, but through her kindness and encouragement.

Her son Jeff describes her as “a very giving and happy person.” My mom loves making other people happy,” he says. “She’s the quintessential first grade teacher. She was always smiling. I remember that she’d grab our hands and start dancing. Her natural outgoing demeanor has helped her stay engaged with her memory problems. Whether caring for her family, teaching young children, or chatting with new friends, Susan spreads sunshine wherever she goes.”

Susan became a resident at the Home after a brief rehab stay at Sosin Center for Rehabilitation. Jeff remarked, “I’m very grateful that we happened upon this place that we were able to get her in for rehab here. And grateful that they found her. The dementia care household is the appropriate place for her; she is able to move around and do what she wants to do. She’s even found a chair that she really likes!”

Jeff continued, “She feels she’s at home here in many ways. Most importantly, she believes that the nurses and aids are part of her extended family. Certainly, she doesn’t feel like she’s living at a facility.”

The family is thankful Susan is safe, involved, and surrounded by the caring staff at The Leavitt Family Jewish Home. She participates in activities, enjoying music, laughing with residents and staff and bringing smiles to those around her. “We are thrilled to see her enjoying familiar routines and remaining active in meaningful ways,” says Jeff. “Staying engaged is vital for individuals living with memory challenges.”

Susan’s story is one of love, generosity, and connection. She has spent a lifetime lifting others up, and her joyful spirit brightens our community each and every day.
